Paul Eastham's RV-9A

10/07/2003

6 hours: I started assembly of the right HS in the skin today. It was going pretty well with a lot of expected fluting to the nose ribs, then everything else went together pretty smoothly. I started drilling but then noticed one hole that was badly misaligned...in fact the same hole was misaligned on every rib on both sides. The error is "only" about 1/32nd of an inch but this can't possibly be good for the riveting which requires (by the mil-spec) well-fitting, round holes only. After a lot of staring and measuring I think this hole is misdrilled -- it was also a minor problem on the other side of the HS... With a lot of crazy-looking fluting I can get the error down to perhaps an acceptable amount, amortizing it across other holes. For those building at home, I am talking about the fourth hole from the back on each of the main ribs.
