Paul Eastham's RV-9A

10/15/2003

10 hour marathon priming day: Welcome to Paul's Aluminum Spa. I offer all of the most modern and noncarcinogenic services. Included in your day are a thorough cleaning with denatured alcohol and scrubbing with scotchbrite loofah...

Then a soothing bath in phosphoric acid etch solution, fizzing away all those hairline scratches and oily contaminants. Then a water rinse and soothing sun-dry.

Now, join your friends out on the lawn for a nice makeover with the finest in AFS products.

All done! Come again soon...

But seriously, this was a lot of work and none of it is any fun when you're wearing a respirator. I can't imagine how much of a pain it would be if you were shooting supertoxic chromates around your backyard.

I have no experience with spray painting other than out of a can, so using the real thing took a bit of getting used to...I had quite a few runs and missed a bunch of spots too. I don't know if it's the AFS primer-sealer or the gun or my technique...the coat is a bit rough in places as well. (I'm using the very cheap Harbor Freight touch-up gun) More thinning may also be in order, though the label says it is not necessary.
